Everything you need to know about Learning to Drive
Learning to drive can be both exciting but daunting task for anyone. However, the lease of life and freedom that being able to drive can give to an individual is immeasurable. Many of our driving students let us know how they are getting on after they’ve passed and we are never surprised how many times we hear that it’s changed their life and they couldn’t imagine not driving. At Driving Excellence Derby, we are a driving school that helps you pass your driving test so you can enjoy the freedom and privilege of being able to drive gives you.
I want to learn to drive but where do I Start?
Step 1: Provisional Driving Licence.
Before booking your first driving lesson with us, you will need to have sorted your Provisional Driving Licence.
You can apply online at: https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence
Whilst applying for your Provisional Driving Licence there are a few requirements that you must meet first. There is also a fee involved.
- be a resident of Great Britain
- meet the minimum age requirement
- meet the minimum eyesight requirement
- not be prevented from driving for any reason
- have a valid UK passport or other form of identity
- have your National Insurance number if known
- provide addresses where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
Step 2: Book your First Driving Lesson

Step 3: Booking your Driving Theory Test
From the minute you book your first lesson with Driving Excellence Derby you will be in safe hands. Generally after the first few lessons Students look to apply to do their Driving Theory Test which can be booked online at the GOV.UK website.

The Driving Theory Test comprises of a Multiple Choice Question/Answer Test and a Hazard Perception Test and you must pass both tests in order to successfully pass your Driving Theory Test.
Step 4: Booking your practical driving test (only when you have spoken to your driving instructor)
The Driving Examiner will be looking for a high standard of driving on all types of roads whether that is roundabouts, both mini and multi lane, junctions and crossroads from small unmarked to large multi-lane light controlled systems.
When learning to drive with Driving Excellence Derby you will build experience on all types of roads and road systems and it is our job to ensure you build confidence on the road and know how to handle tricky spots and be prepared to handle a range of situations.
